SWEDISH SEPTEMBER RARITY REPORT. Aug 28 - Sept 30, 2001

September was a very rainy month this year, but it didn't stop the birders to find some goodies.

The major news is Pallid Harrier (Circus macrourus) in highest number ever.
Also Richard's Pipit (Anthus richardi) was seen in very high numbers.

+ 1 the previous period, make a total of 56 reported sofar in August - September. And yesterday there was another one and today 1, so it will be over 60 this season. All observations have to be accepted by the rarities committee, and some may be double-counts, but the previous best year was 1952, when 34 Pallid Harriers were counted.

It has moulded from summer plumage to winter plumage during the 3 months.
The first for Sweden, and only no. 5 or so for Europe.

Lots of these this autumn, and they started showing up already in July.
Many records all over southern and middle sweden. Highest number 7 at Knösen, Skanör (Scania) 23.9. The total number at least 30, maybe 50 during this period !

Invasion species: Two-barred Crossbill, Loxia leucoptera (bändelkorsnäbb)
Fairly many small flocks are around in middle and southern Sweden.

Lots of Blue Tit, Parus caeruleus (blåmes) are migrating at Falsterbo in SW Sweden.
Few Spotted Nutcrackers, Nucifraga caryocatactes (nötkråka) so far.
