SWEDISH RARITY REPORT. 1 - 31 May 2004

Below is a compilation of rare birds in Sweden in May.

Today (the Swedish National Day, 6 June) Scania got it's first Black-headed Bunting, Emberiza malanocephala.
The province Scania (which is the southermost province in Sweden), now has 410 species, province Öland is second on 402 species and Halland has 374. Province Härjedalen is on 25th and last place on 228 species (and rarely mentioned in these reports..). For a map on the locations of all provinces, see http://www.pheromone.ekol.lu.se/sverige.html

Most of the rarities listed below are not official Swedish records until accepted by national or local rarities committees.

3 ad in total (in Scania, Östergötland and Öland 2 - 10.5)

Egyptian Goose, Alopochen aegyptiacus (nilgås) (cat. C)
1 pair in Scania on several locations and 1 in Halland in many locations.

American Wigeon, Anas americana (amerikansk bläsand)
1 ad m in Lake Kvismaren (Närke) 3.5, 1 ad m Lake Limsjön (Dalarna) 5-6.5.

Green-winged Teal, Anas carolinensis (amerikansk kricka) (split 2003)
Most records in north Sweden in the beginning of May; (1 Lapland, 1 Västerbotten, 1 Ångermanland, 1 Norbotten) + also later in May south/middle Sweden; 1 Halland, 1 Uppland, 1 Västmanland, 1 Östergötland, 1 Småland. Some of the records probably regard same individual.

Blue-winged Teal, Anas discors (blåvingad årta)
1 ad m Vattenmöllan (Scania) 2.5 and 1 ad m Öjebyn (Norrbotten) 8.5.

Leser Scaup, Aythya affinis (mindre bergand)
1 ad m St. Nadden (Västmanland) 1-5.5.

Surf Scooter, Melanitta perspicillata (vitnackad svärta)
1 ad m Gnarp (Hälsningland) 25-26.5.

Ruddy Duck, Oxyura jamaicensis (amerikansk kopparand) (cat. C)
A flock of 4-5 in Södermanland + in Ångermanland and Uppland.

BLACK-BROWED ALBATROSS, Thallassarche melanophris (svartbrynad albatross)
1 ad (possibly the same individual as 3 years ago, then the first record in Swedish waters); Skälderviken 15.5 all day;
seen from Kattvik, Torekov and Hovs Hallar in Scania and from Tyludden, Mellbystrand and Påarp in Halland.

Cory's Shearwatwater, Calonectris diomedea (gulnäbbad lira)
1 Malmö (Scania) 25.5.

Squacco Heron, Ardeola ralloides (rallhäger)
1 Strandbaden (Scania) 11-16.5.

Little Egret, Egretta garzetta (silkeshäger)
3-5 in Scania, Halland and Blekinge 3-22.5.

Lesser Spotted Eagle, Aquila pomarina (mindre skrikörn)
1 subad Fristad 13.5 and Öxnevalla 20.5 (Västergötland).

Eastern Imperial Eagle, Aquila heliaca (kejsarörn)
The individual from April still at Landön (Scania) 16.5, then probably the same, at Bergkvara (Småland) 19.5 and on southern Öland 20.5.

Red-footed Falcon, Falco vespertinus (aftonfalk)
15 - 20 reported.

Little Crake, Porzana parva (mindre sumphöna)
1 ringed Ottenby (Öland) 10.5, 1 Möckelmosen (Öland) 13-25.5.

Pectoral Sandpiper, Calidris melanotos (tuvsnäppa)
At least 6; at Öland, Gotland, Uppland, Dalarna and Östergötland.

Marsh Sandpiper, Tringa stagnatilis (dammsnäppa)
4; at Södermanland, Blekinge, Östergötland and Öland.

Lesser Yellowlegs, Tringa flavipes (mindre gulbena)
1 at Stavstensudden (Scania) 8.5 and probably the same individual; Vellinge ängar (Scania) 21-26.5.

Terek Sandpiper, Xenus cinereus (tereksnäppa)
1 Nagelhamnsviken (Västerbotten) 19.5, 1 Beijershamn (Öland) 24-26.5 and 1 Ölmevalla (Halland) 25-26.5.

White-winged Tern, Chlidonias leucopterus (vitvingad tärna)
1 ad Lake Roxen (Östergötland) 8-9.5, 1 Glåpen (Västmanland) 15-16.5, 1 Revsudden (Småland) 19.5.

Ring-billed Gull, Larus delawarensis (ringnäbbad mås)
1 ad Älmar (Gotland) 22-26.5.

Great Skua, Catharacta skua (storlabb)

Blyth's Reed Warbler, Acrocephalus dumetorum (busksångare)
1 SW Smedjebacken (Dalarna) 29-30.5 and 1 ringed Utklippan (Blekinge) 31.5.

TAIGA FLYCATCHER, Ficedula albicilla (taigaflugsnappare) (split)
1 Ön, Umeå (Västerbotten) 29.5. Will be 2nd rec. for Sweden if accepted.

Short-toed Treecreeper, Certhia brachydactyla (trädgårdsträdkrypare)
The one from April still in Lerhamn (Scania) whole of May (1.5 - 31.5).

ISABELLINE SHRIKE, Lanius isabellinus (isabellatörnskata)
1 Beddinge (Scania) 26-27.5. 12th record.

Lesser Grey Shrike, Lanius minor (svartpannad törnskata)
1 Ölands norra udde (Öland) 1.5, 1 Stockviken (Gotland) 14-15.5, 1 Morups Tånge (Halland) 20.5 and 1 Båtafjorden (Halland) 25.5.

Woodchat Shrike, Lanius senator (rödhuvad törnskata)
Rose-coloured Starling, Sturnus roseus (rosenstare)
1 Täby (Uppland) 2.5 and 1 Resmo (Öland) 21.5.
