SWEDISH RARITY REPORT. July 13 - Aug 30, 2001

July nowadays is a much more busy period concerning rarities than it used to be, so a fair number of rarities was seen.
The major one is the Oriental Pratincole (Glareola maldivarium) I wrote about in the last report. Most facts are pointing towards an acceptance of the bird as indeed an Oriental and not a Collared Pratincole (G. pratincola), and the bird is still at the same spot (60 days now), moulding during that time. There are very few records in Europe before of this eastern species.
Sources: Club 300 hotline system.
Most of the rarities listed below are not official Swedish records until accepted by the national or local rarities committees.

ORIENTAL PRATINCOLE (?), Glareola maldivarum (orientvadarsvala)
1 2y (?) at Ängsnäset, Falsterbo peninsula (Scania) 2.7 - and still there today 30.8,
caused a major debate. The plumage is a bit worn, but not VERY much. It seems that there are more characters pointing towards Oriental Pratincole than towards Collared (G. pratincola), so IF it will be accepted as an Oriental Pratincole, it will be new to Sweden (number 469, or if the American Mourning Dove is accepted as cat. A-C number 470). The DNA-analysis of collected feathers thought to be dropped by the bird showed Northern Lapwing (Vanellus vanellus) and Common Starling (Sturnus vulgaris)........
If accepted it will be species No. 400 for the province Scania, leading the "province league" with a few species over the province Öland.
