RARE BIRDS IN SWEDEN 1 August – 30 September 2004.

The summer months June-July were very bad wheaterwise (cold and rainy) and Aug – Sept was fairly calm concerning rarities.

During the last few days in October it has improved, with an influx of eastern and northern  specialities, like the 3rd  Swedish record 6.10 of  Eastern Olivaceous Warbler (Hippolais pallida) (eksŒngare) , 3-4 Surf Scooters (Melanitta perspicillata) (vitnackad svŠrta), and lots of  PallasÕs Leaf Warbler (Phylloscopus proregulus) (kungsfŒgelsŒngare), also RaddeÕs Warbler, (Ph. schwarzi) (videsŒngare), Red-flanked Bluetail (Tarsiger cyanurus) (blŒstjŠrt) etc.

Egyptian Goose, Alopochen aegyptica (nilgŒs) (cat. C)

1 summering in Lake Krankesjšn (Scania) until 14.8, 1 Hasslarp (Scania) 4.9.

 

Red-crested Pochard, Netta rufina (ršdhuvad dykand)

1 f Lake Krankesjšn - Vomb area (Scania) 13-26.9.

 

Black Scooter, Melanitta nigra americana (amerikansk sjšorre)

1 m Revsudden (SmŒland) 2.8.    (a proposed split)

 

Surf Scoter, Melanitta perspicillata (vitnackad svŠrta)

1 ad m Skummeslšvsstrand (Halland) 28.9 – still there 11.10.

 

CoryÕs Shearwater, Calonectris leucomelas (gulnŠbbad lira)

1 Hermanš – Sote huvud (BohuslŠn) 21-22.8,  3-4 Halland – Scanian west coast 13-28.9.

 

BALEARIC SHEARWATER, Puffinus mauretanicus (balearisk lira)

1 Hšnš (BohuslŠn) 21.8, and 1 there 14.9.

 

European Storm-petrel, Hydrobates pelagicus (stormsvala)

1 Ringhals (Halland), 3 ringed Hermanš (BohuslŠn) 24.8, 1 ringed MŒseskŠr (BohuslŠn) 5.9, 1 Glommen (Halland) 22.9, 1 Getteršn (Halland) 27.9.

 

Black Stork, Ciconia nigra (svart stork)

1 Vitaby (Scania) 18.8.

 

Pallid Harrier, Circus macrourus (stŠpphšk)

2-3 Scania, 1 …stergštland, 1-2 Halland and 1 VŠstmanland end of August. In September over 10, most claimed record concerns juveniles.

 

Lesser Spotted Eagle, Aquila pomarina (mindre skrikšrn)

1, or possibly 2 individuals in southern Scania 2-13.8.

 

Steppe Eagle, Aquila nipalensis (stŠppšrn)

1 subad southern Scania 5.8-8.9 (when it left Sweden at Nabben, Falsterbo).

 

Eastern Imperial Eagle, Aquila heliaca (kejsaršrn)

1 subad southern Scania 5-9.9.

 

Black-winged Pratincole, Glareola nordmanni (svartvingad vadarsvala)

1 LedskŠrsviken (Uppland) 8.8.

 

American Golden Plover, Pluvialis dominica (amerikansk tundrapipare)

1 HallgŒrds (Gotland) 26.9.

 

Pectoral Sandpiper, Calidris melanotus (tuvsnŠppa)   12 to 15 individuals.

 

Buff-breasted Sandpiper, Tryngites subruficollis (prŠrielšpare)

1 Risingehamn (…land) 17.9, 2 southernmost …land 18-29.9.

 

Long-billed Dowitcher, Limnodromus scolopaceus (stšrre beckasinsnŠppa)

1 Lake V. Vadsjšn (Sšdermanland) 13-18.8.

 

Marsh Sandpiper, Tringa stagnatilis (dammsnŠppa)

1 Triberga 22.8 and Beijershamn (…land) 23.8.

 

Terek Sandpiper, Xenus cinereus (tereksnŠppa)

1 Stockviken (Gotland) 22.9.

 

Red Phalarope, Phalaropus fulicarius (brednŠbbad simsnŠppa)

1 Vinga (VŠstergštland)

 

Great Skua, Catharacta skua (storlabb)

Big numbers on the West coast, especially 22.8 (over 50), and 17-18.9.

 

SabineÕs Gull, Larus sabini (tŠrnmŒs) 

About 40-50  on the West coast 11-30.9  (101 reports on the minicall system)

Also 1 in ngermanland in the Baltic Sea 16.9.

 

White-winged Tern, Chlidonia leucopterus (vitvingad tŠrna)

1 ad Beijershamn (…land) 2.8, 1 juv Falsterbo (Scania) 15.8.

 

Little Auk, Alle alle (alkekung)

1 Faludden (Gotland) 27.9, 1 Lomma (Scaania) 27.9.

 

European Turtle Dove, Streptopeliaa turtur (turturduva)

1 …stergštland, 2 Gotland, 1 Scania, 1 VŠstmanland, 1 Uppland.

 

European Bee-eater, Merops apiaster (biŠtare)

A flock of 4-5 NŠsby (…land) 19.8, and singles seen on …land 14.8-2.9,  1 Grštvik (Halland) 7.8.

 

Eurasian Hoopoe, Upupa epops (hŠrfŒgel)

1 Hšlick (HŠlsingland) 1-3.8, 1 NorrekŒs (Scania) 1.9, 1 Segmon (VŠrmland) 26.9.

 

RichardÕs Pipit, Anthus richardi (stšrre piplŠrka)

About 10, between 11-30.9 in Scania, Halland, …land, VŠrmland, Sšdermanland, BohuslŠn.

 

Citrine Wagtaail, Motacilla citreola (citronŠrla)

1 VŠstergarnsviken (Gotland) 14.8, 1 Tredenborg (Blekinge) 12.9, 1 Stockviken (Gotland) 15.9.

 

Common Stonechat, Saxicola torquatus (svarthakad buskskvŠtta)

1 Mark (VŠstergštland) 22.8.

 

River Warbler, Locustella fluviaatilis (flodsŒngare)

1 KlŠckeberga (SmŒland) 5.8, 1 Kšping (VŠstmanland) 14.8.

 

Yellow-browed Warbler, Phylloscopus inornatus (taigasŒngare)

About 20, between 12-29.9. Most up north (Norrbotten and VŠsterbotten).

 

Short-toed Treecreeper, Certhia brachydactyla (trŠdgŒrdstrŠdkrypare)

1 bird seen 26.9 at the locality were a pair was singing and breeding during the spring and summer, at Lerhamn (Scania).

 

Lesser Grey Shrike, Lanius minor(svartpannad tšrnskata)

1 ad m Sebybadet (…land) 2.8.

 

SOUTHERN GREY SHRIKE, Lanius meridionalis (škenvarfŒgel)  

1 juv FŠllvikshamn (ngermanland) 19.9.   Record 7 in Sweden.

 

Rose-coloured Starling, Sturnus roseus (rosenstare)  About 4. One juv stayed at Morups TŒnge (Halland) 10.8 – 30.9.

 

Two-barred crossbill, Loxia leucoptera (bŠndelkorsnŠbb)

Flocks seen in Lapland and VŠsterbotten in August, and Ludvika (Dalarna) 27.8, singles or pairs in middle/southern Sweden in Aug-Sept.

 

Pine Grosbeak, Pinicola enucleator (tallbit)

1 VŠsterŒs (VŠstmanland) 22.9, 1 Dalsta (Sšdermanland) 25.9.

Aves sp.  Lidingš (Uppland) 7.9. Still not definitely identified, very intense identication debate on the maillists about this bird.
