Happy New Year !

Was off on skiing vacation week 1 (Dalarna, middle of Sweden -25. Lots of singing Crossbills in the spruce forest, and one Three-toed Woodpecker. 10 species in one week !

Just recovered from yesterdays Winter Bird Safari (20 January) when 14 teams (3-4 people in each) tried to see as many bird species as possible between 00.00-18.00 in the southernmost Swedish province, Scania.
This was the third time this event was arranged.
1994 the winning team had 98 species (a fairly mild winter)
1995 the winning team (our team !) had 93 species (very foggy weather)
1996 the winning team (same as 1994) had 100 species ! (in spite of a severe winter in December-beginning of January). A very good number this time of the year.
But they worked hard; checking good spots 7 days in a row before the competition and driving 690 km (in Scania !) on the Safari.
Our team was struck with some bad luck (and was too lazy with checking out good spots in advance), we only had 85 species this year, several other teams had 91 and 92 species. We drove 360 km, and started a bit late, 6.30. Next year we will come more prepared !

Some of the birds seen during the Safari by different teams were Bittern, Bewick s Swan, Barnacle Goose, Pink-footed Goose, Gadwall, 2-3 Peregrine Falcons, several Golden Eagles, several White-tailed Eagles, Skylark, Pied Wagtail, Grey Wagtail, Dipper, Waxwing (common), Dunnock, Black Redstart, Mistle Thrush, Bearded Tit, Great Grey Shrike, Nutcracker, Arctic Redpoll, Reed Bunting.

1995 132 species was seen altogether, I think the number was somewhat less this year.

SWEDEN MARCH 1996.

I couldn't resist it, went up to Lapland to see the Azure Tit this Thuesday (1230 km on 12,5 hours, hard work, nice views on the comet).
The bird was very nice and confiding, got pictures. It was feeding together with sparrows, tits, waxwings, greenfinches and bullfinches on a feeder at a small farm at Sörnoret, outside Åsele, southern Lapland.

Close by there is a spruce forest which has been thoroughly checked by hundreds of birders passing by (we met the Swedish Television there..), and several nice species has been recorded there the last weeks; Pine Grosbeak, Two-barred Crossbill, Grey-headed and Three-töd Woodpecker, Siberian Jay etc.
We saw at least 2 pairs of Two-barred Crossbills in display flight and singing a peculiar rattling song, plus the funny trumpet-call you can hear on migration.

The Azure Tit (Parus cyanus) has been on this spot since about 20 February, 12 March the rumour spread and since then hundreds of people have been there.
It's the third record in Sweden, but the first twitchable. The first was in the 18th century...

Lots of people are going up there this weekend to get it on their Swedish lists, but it s around 1800 km from Lund, so I ll pass. I went for the Azure tit, 1250 km on 13 hours (one way !). The funny thing was that I was in Pajala last summer looking for a plant, maybe I missed the bluetails then...
