The last report covering the 20th century. A mild and windy period.

The EBN-Sweden website now has an updated Holarctic list with all accepted Swedish records by the Swedish rarities committee up to 31 Dec 1998 (published Dec-99).

The swedish list is now 459.
New species for Sweden 1998: Blyth's Pipit, Anthus godlewski (mongolpiplärka).
There was also a new race for Europe in 1998 (i.e. west of Ural) ;
Red-breasted Flycatcher, Ficedula parva albicilla (taigaflugsnappare).
(Races are not listed in the Holarctic list though).

(Good numbers of migrating Red-throated Loon, Gavia stellata, smålom: 2000 at Revsudden (Småland) 19.11 and 1200 Simrishamn (Scania) 20.11)

Great Shearwater, Puffinus gravis (större lira)
1 individual found with a broken wing (and later killed) in the Lake Vänern at Baggerud (Värmland). Probably caught a in fishing tackle.
Lake Vänern is the largest lake in Sweden.

Leach s Storm-petrel, Oceanodroma leucohoa (klykstjärtad stormsvala)
1 Hönö (Bohuslän) 27.11.
The end of Nov and the beginning of Dec was very windy, with the hurricane Carola Dec 3-4, which felled many thousands of trees in southern Sweden. High numbers of Leach S.P. was found from 29 Nov-4 Dec, in total around 90 along the west coast, with highest number 28 at Skummeslöv (Halland) 4.12 and 6 there 18.12.

Long-tailed Duck, Clangula hyemalis (alfågel)
High numbers of migrating birds, for example;
18700 at Simrishamn (Scania) 20.11.

White-tailed Eagle, Haliaeetus albicilla (havsörn)
Good numbers of wintering birds in south Sweden, especially were carrions are put out. The highest number was 38 eagles (!!) at the same carrion at Lake Åsnen (Småland) 5.12 (+ 7 more in the area).

(Got it on my new millenium list Jan 1, after some heavy partying in Falsterbo...).

8000 S Hönö (Bohuslän) 27.11 is a very good number !
Also 1245 here 7.12.

Highest counts:
30 Segelskären-Ursholmarna (Bohuslän) 13.11.
At Hönö (Bohuslän): 151 27.11, 36 28.11, 553 29.11, 185 1.12, and 27 7.12 makes a total of almost 1000 here.
At Hovs Hallar (Scania) best day 1.12 with 192.

Unusual high numbers , probably due to lack of food in the north;

1 Kristinehamn (Värmland) 8-9.11, 1 Varberg (Halland) 24.11

CHIMNEY SWIFT, Chaetura pelagica (skorstensseglare)
The one seen 6-7.11 came back 12-13.11 at the same spot at Gårdby (Öland) ! The first for Scandinavia.

I have found the following records from Europe during the autumn-99;
UK: 7 in October (5 records before 1999)
Ireland: 7 in October
Portugal: 5 in October
Sweden: 1 in November
The number of European records increased from 5 to 25 in 2 months !
