SWEDISH RARITY REPORT August 25 - September 7

The warm summer weather suddenly changed to windy and rainy weather at the end of the period. 8-10.9 there was at least 5 Sabine s Gull and a number of Storm Petrels along the west coast. One Sabine s is staying in Lomma, Scania, I had it within 10 meters yesterday, 11.9. The fax from Club 300 covers the period up to 7.9, so more details about seabirds in the next message.

1 ad m at Getterön (Halland) 11-31.8.

Spotted Eagle, Aquila clanga (större skrikörn)
1 2y at Näsbyholm (Scania) from 23.8 and the whole period.

Lesser Spotted Eagle, A. pomarina (mindre skrikörn)
1 at Falsterbo (Scania) 31.8, and another one at Näsbyholm (Scania) from 31.8-7.9.

1 escaped Saker, Falco cherrug (tatarfalk) with long leather bands
at Falsterbo (Scania) 31.8 (went south), prob. the same as seen in Näsbyholm 23.8.

1 at Nyteboda (Scania/Blekinge) 29.8.

Pallid Harrier, Circus macrourus (stäpphök)
1 ad m at Landsort (Södermanland) 30.8.

Red-footed Falcon, Falco vespertinus (aftonfalk)
1 juv at Össby - Ottenby (Öland) 29-30.8, 1 ad m at Mönster (Halland) 30.8, 1 juv NE Trelleborg (Scania) 1.9, 1 f at Grötvik (Halland) 1.9, 1 juv at Onsala (Halland) 3.9, 2 juv at Kapelludden (Gotland) 5-6.9, 1 ad m at Stockviken (Gotland) 6.9 and 1 juv at Lake Krankesjön (Scania) 7.9. A total of at least 9.

1 1y at Stora Rör (Öland) 31.8 (or was it more than halfway to Småland.....:-)

Hoopoe, Upupa epops (härfågel)
1 at Rämnet (Härjedalen) 7.9. First bird report from this province 1997 !

Citrine Wagtail, Motacilla citreola (citronärla)
1 juv at Falsterbo (Scania) 1.9. (only reported this day, but stayed for at least 5 days).

Yellow-browed Warbler, Phylloscopus inornatus (taigasångare)
1 at Smedjebacken (Dalarna) 3.9.

Little Bunting, Emberiza pusilla (dvärgsparv)
1 ringed at Umeå (Västerbotten) 23.8.

Two-barred Crossbill, Loxia leucoptera (bändelkorsnäbb)
Small migrating flocks in many places in southern Sweden, a total of at least 50. Highest number 16 at Lerjan (Halland) 29.8. In northern Sweden the best spot Stora Fjeaderägg (Västerbotten), 5-20 birds seen daily.
At Sönnerstagrundet (Västerbotten) September 1:
743 Wigeons, Anas penelope (bläsand) was counted passing south.

At Landsort (Södermanland) August 28:
120 Nutcrackers, Nucifraga caryocactates c. (the thick-billed race)(brednäbbad nötkråka) passed by. During the period 28.8-1.9 a total of 227.

A very high number, up to 21, of Spotted Crake, Porzana porzana (småflackig sumphöna) have been recorded 27.8-7.9 at Paviken (Gotland).

The first recorded breeding of Goldfinch, Carduelis carduelis (steglits) in Västerbotten: Umeå in August.
