EuroBirdNet - since 1990.
In the previous report I wrote about 3 West Palearctic records of Long-tailed Shrike,
Lanius schach (rostgumpad törnskata), taken from Cramp, HWP vol. 7. It seems that
the record from Hungary has been cancelled, so the Swedish record 11 June at Stora
Karlsö (Gotland) should be the first for Europe if accepted. It seems the bird is a short
distance migrant, so it is possible it could be accepted as spontaneous and not an
escape. We will see.
Yesterday afternoon 3 birders had a good view of a large swift for about 20 minutes
at Getterön (Halland). The bird looked like a Pacific Swift, Apus pacificus (orientseglare).
The bird then took height together with Swifts and disappeared.
I have tried to find out about previous European/WP records;
The first was one captured at Leman Bank gas platform in the North Sea, 19 June 1981.
It was taken ashore and released in Norfolk, England the same day.
Then there has been at least 2 more records in Britain (probably accepted);
Cley, Norfolk 30 May 1993.
Daventry Reservoir, Warwickshire, summer (?)1997
+ one claimed record at the Isles of Scilly.
There is also one record in Norway.
So in total, only 4-5 previous records in WP if I am right.
