Rare birds in Sweden June 16 - August 3, 2003

The major event sofar this summer has been the amazing number of rare waders showing up on the island Öland in the Baltic Sea during June - July. 8 species !

Most of the rarities listed below are not official Swedish records until accepted by national or local rarities committees.

About 12 along the Swedish west coast 20-24.6, and a few in July.

Glossy Ibis, Plegadis falcinellus (bronsibis)
1 Veselången (Västergötland) 6.7.

Purple Heron, Ardea purpurea (purpurhäger)
1 Lillklyvan (Västerbotten) 15.7.

LESSER SCAUP, Aythya affinis (mindre bergand)
1 ad m Sättunaviken (Södermanland) 21-23.6.

(The alert about the first Swedish CANVASBACK, Aythya valisineria, 31.7 was false. It was a Common Pochard, Aythya ferina, brunand)
Also the Long-legged Buzzard (Buteo rufinus) from previous report was determined to a Rough-legged (Buteo lagopus, fjällvråk).

Aquila pomarina (mindre skrikörn)
1 ad Umeå airport (Västerbotten) 16-27.6, 1 subad Ledskärsviken (Uppland) 28.6, 1 ad Rommeholen (Dalarna) 13.7, 1 subad Lake Björkesåkrasjön area (Scania) 13-26.7.

Red-footed Falcon, Falco vespertinus (aftonfalk)
1 Blekinge, 2 Gotland, 2 Småland, 2 Scania, 1 Norrbotten.

Baillon's Crake, Porzana pusilla (dvärgsumphöna)
1 Angarnsjöängen (Uppland) 28.6-6.7.

COLLARED PRATINCOLE, Glareola pratincola (rödvingad vadarsvala)
1 Skanör (Scania) 30.6. Record no. 16 in Sweden.

GREATER SAND PLOVER, Charadrius leschenaultii (ökenpipare)
1 subad m Ottenby and southern Öland 13-18.7, 1 ad m Stora Ören - Stenåsa (Öland) 19-231.7. Record 8 and 9 for Sweden.

Pacific Golden Plover, Pluvialis fulva (sibirisk tundrapipare)
1 Ölmevalla (Halland) 17.6, 1 Utlängan (Blekinge) 15.7.

AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER, Pluvialis dominica (amerikansk tundrapipare)
1 ad m southern Öland 17.7- still there 6.8.
1 s Galterö (Västergötland) 22.7. Record 17 and 18 for Sweden.

HUDSONIAN GODWIT, Limosa haeasica (hudsonspov)
The adult at Greda/Vässby (Öland) stayed 14-21.6. First for Sweden.
A very unexpected visitor, only 3-4 previous records in Europe.

GREY-TAILED TATTLER, Heteroscelus brevipes (sibirisk gråsnäppa)
1 at Sebybadet (Öland) 12.7. Also the first for Sweden !
Unfortunately only stayed very briefly, so very few birders saw it.

1 ad Beijershamn (Öland) 1-3.7, 1 ad Sandvik (Öland) 14.7.

1 Hjälstaviken (Uppland) 8.7, 1 Stenåsa - Stora Ören (Öland) 14-19.7, 1 Hasslarp (Scania) 21-23.7, 1 Sättunaviken (Östergötland) 23-24.7, 1 Getterön (Halland) 3.8.

Terek Sandpiper, Xenus cinereus (tereksnäppa)
1 Beijershamn (Öland) 2-4.7 and (probably the same) Eckels udde 6.7 and Risingehamn 8.7, 1 Morups tånge (Halland) 12.7 and (probably the same) Hovs hallar (Scania) 12.7. 1 Torhamn (Blekinge) 15-17.7, 1 Beijershamn (Öland) 18.7.

1 Högby (Öland) 23.6.

White-winged Tern, Chlidonias leucopterus (vitvingad tärna)

Great Skua, Catharacta skua (storlabb)
About 6 along the west coast 19-22.6. 1 Kåseberga (Scania) 30.6, 3 Hönö (Bohuslän) 12.7, 1 Hovs hallar and Kullaberg (Scania) 12.7.

European Bee-eater, Merops apiaster (biätare)
1 Ås (Öland) 26.6 and 1 19.7, 1 Gullspång (Västergötland) 5.7.

GREAT SPOTTED CUCKOO, Clamator glandarius (skatgök)
1 juv. Sysneudd (Gotland) 15.7. Record no. 4.

Red-rumped Swallow, Hirundo daurica (rostgumpsvala)
1 Kullaberg (Scania) 28.6, 1 Lindhult (Halland) 6.7.

Citrine Wagtail, Motacilla citreola (citronärla)
1 Beijershamn (Öland) 18.7 and 3.8, 1 Hallands väderö (Scania) 3.8.

Common Nightingale, Luscinia megarhyncos (sydnäktergal)
1 singing Västervik (Småland) 10.6 - 2.7. 1 Välen (Västergötland) 8.7.

LANCEOLATED WARBLER, Locustella lanceolata (träsksångare)
1 Bräcke (Jämtland) 8.7. Record no. 7 or 8.

Arctic Warbler, Phylloscopus borealis (nordsångare)
1 Vitberget (Norrbotten) 16.6, 1 Abisko (Lapland) 22-28.6, 1 Ritsem (Lapland) 14.7.

Firecrest, Regulus ignicapillus (brandkronad kungsfågel)
1 confirmed breeding at Lake Björkesåkrasjön (Scania) in June.

Woodchat Shrike, Lanius senator (rödhuvad törnskata)
1 f Utö (Södermanland) 23.6.

Rose-coloured Starling, Sturnus roseus (rosenstare)
1 ad m Getterön (Halland) 18.6, 1 1y there 29.6. 1 ad m Morups tånge (Halland) 5.7 and again Getterön 10.7. 1 Skär (Gotalnd) 20.7, 1 Näsby (Öland) 2.8.

Yellow-breasted Bunting, Emberiza aureola (gyllensparv)
1 f Uppsala (Uppland) 1.7.

NOTE: In December 2003 the Swedish Taxonomic Committee will announce some changes in the Swedish List, probably at least 5 new splits will be made.
