SWEDISH RARITY REPORT. August 14 - September 24, 2000

After a rather calm September with very sunny and warm weatcher October have started up with a good influx of eastern rarities, especially at Öland in the Baltic Sea.
3 Dusky Warbler, 1 Radde's Warbler, 1 Booted Warbler, 1 Olive-backed Pipit and 1 Lanceolated Warbler (found dead though, 5th rec, new for Öland) during the last week.
(Phylloscopus fuscatus, Ph. schwarzi, Hippolais caligata, Anthus hodgsoni, Locustella lanceolata).
(brunsångare, videsångare, gråsångare, sibirisk piplärka, träsksångare).
Also more Dusky Warbler along the Swedish east coast, together with the usual eastern specialities; Pallas's Leaf Warbler, Yellow-browed Warbler, "Eastern" Stonechat (Ph. proregulus, Ph. inornatus, Saxicola torquata maura)
Still unusually mild weather though, almost 20 in the beginning of October, with easterly winds, but falling to 10-15 the last week.

Waiting for detailed report from Club 300, not yet available after 24.9, so more details later.

EGYPTIAN VULTURE, Neophron percnopterus (smutsgam)
The probable single 3y (nominate race) individual was seen at many places in Sweden since May 21 (Scania). In June seen in Hälsingland, in July seen in Scania, Öland, Södermanland, in August Scania and Öland.Last seen at Spillepengen garbage dump, Malmö (Scania) 15.8 heading south. (No. 6 for Sweden).

EURASIAN GRIFFON VULTURE, Gyps fulvus (gåsgam)
1 at 2.20 p.m. at Mälarhöjden,Stockholm (Södermanland) 26.8.
This bird is probably the one seen a lot in Finland during the summer, since it was seen taking height some hours earlier the same day in Finland. Only the second Swedish record.

1 subad Näsbyholm (Scania) 22.8 and 9-10.9. 1 subad (the same?) migrated Falsterbo (Scania) 14.9.

Booted Eagle, A. pennatus (dvärgörn)
1 (dark) Fritsla (Västergötland) 21.8.

1 ad summer at Örtofta ponds, N. Lund (Scania) 10-14.8.
An interesting record, as one was seen at the same spot 19-20 Aug. 1999, so it could be the same bird. Both years it was found together with big numbers of other waders. But the record will be considered as a new, so it will be No. 6.

Common Stonechat, Saxicola torquata torguata (svarthakad buskskvätta)
At Vårhallarna (Scania) one male was found 14.3. Then 24 April it was joined by a female. They bred in May-June and got 3 nestlings. First Swedish breeding record. Probably race torquata.Then in July they had a second brood with 4 nestlings! So now there are 2 adults and 7 juveniles at the spot. Very nice. Soon we can hopefully count this species as a new breeding species on the Swedish list.
The birds remained until 24.9.

1 singing Ersnäs, S Luleå (Norrbotten) 19-20.7. No. 4 for Sweden if accepted (good recordings are needed!).
