SWEDISH RARITY REPORT 1 - 23 January 2000

The first report covering the 3rd millenium (not the whole though).

Pretty calm except for the superb Snowy Owls, this winters invasion species.
Still some influx and movements. Last period an estimated 35 were seen, this period around 12 new was reported.
Sources: Mainly from the Swedish hotline run by Club 300.
Most of the rarities listed below are not official Swedish records until accepted by the national or local rarities committees.

The 1y at Falsterbo - Skanör (Scania) stayed until 3.1.

1 2-3y wintering at Glommen (Halland).
1 ad Gårdby (Öland) 2.1, 1 young Koviks udde (Uppland) 5.1, 1 3y Baggerud (Värmland) 15-16.1, 1 3y Byxelkrok (Öland) 10-16.1, 1 2y Östergarn (Gotland) 16.1.

Iceland Gull, L. glaucoides (vitvingad trut)
1 ad Glommen (Halland) 2.1 and 15.1.
1 2y seen now and then at Glommen and Norra Näs (Halland) 6-23.1 + Träslövsläge 14.1.

Snowy Owl, Nyctea scandiaca (fjälluggla)      INVASION
Last period (Nov-Dec 1999 an estimated 35 Snowy Owls were seen all over Sweden.

In January some remained at the same spots (counted in the prevous report);
2 at Gessie Villastad (Scania) from around 15.12, stayed until 22.1.
1 subad m Stormaren (Öland) 29.12- 6.1.

At new sites the following were seen;
1 f Ilstorp (Scania) 4.1, and 1 there 21.1.
4 f SW Mellby (Öland) 5-9.1, between 10-16.1 3 individuals remained, and between 17-23.1 they were 2.
1 ad m Högvallta (Värmland) 6.1.
1 Kållered (Västergötland) 10.1.
1 f Hartsö Enskär (Södermanland) 15.1.
1 f Fågeludden, at Lake Hornborgasjön (Västergötland) 16.1-22.1.
1 Nyköping (Södermanland) 17.1.
1 near Fjällmossen (Scania) 23.1.
1 f Trollhättan (Västergötland) 22-23.1, but had been there during 3 weeks (according to locals).

So this period around 12 new, add 35 for Nov-Dec, and it will be almost 50 this winter in Sweden sofar.
Northern Hawk Owl, Surnia ulula (hökuggla)
Several in southern and middle Sweden, out of the normal range.

Richard s Pipit, Anthus richardi (större piplärka)
1 Utlängan (Blekinge) from 3 Dec - still there.

Water Pipit, Anthus spinoletta (vattenpiplärka)
2 at Äspet, Åhus (Scania) 2-6.1, one stayed -16.1.
1 Galtabäck (Halland) 18.1, 2 Stavstensudden, Utlängan (Blekinge) 19.1 and 1 Sydudden, Utlängan -22.1. The island Utlängan in the Blekinge archipelago seems to be this winters Pipits hot spot.

PINE BUNTING, Emberiza leococephalos (tallsparv)
1 2y m wintering at Sandvik, Hisingen (Bohuslän) 24.12 - still there. No. 16 for Sweden.
