SWEDISH RARITY REPORT. July 12 - August 13, 2000

Now when the observation compilation system is running smootly again there is a new annoying factor;
Suddenly the ebn-server refuse to forward my messages, despite I have had e-mail since 1988 and belong to a University with 25 000 addresses. So until / if this can be fixed, Martin Helin has to forward them. Our mail server has no relaying-function that I know of, so I can't see the problem why the ebn-server stops my messages.
I will be in Brazil 20.8 - 2.9, tschau !

The third one after upgrade was;
1 m Åmål (Dalsland) 10.7 - still there.
No. 4; 1 m Hullsjön (Västergötland) 19.7.

EGYPTIAN VULTURE, Neophron percnopterus (smutsgam)
1 subad (nominate race) has been around in Sweden the whole summer. It is probably only one individual. In July it was mainly on Öland (Ekelunda 10.7, Kleva 14.7, Ventlinge 18.7). Then it was a tour in Scania (Falsterbo 24.7 and 26.7), went up 500 km to Södermanland (Uvängen, Sorunda 30.7) and then down to Öland again (Näsby 1-3.8, Segerstad 3.8, Smedby 4.8, a short tour towards Småland, back on Öland, Risinge 4.8, Skogsby 5.8, Seby 6.8, Ottenby 7.8, Stenåsa 9.8) and down to Scania again !! (Falsterbo 13.8, when it went towards Denmark for a while, but then went up to Malmö in the evening).

There was one record in Scania in May (only seen by 1 observer) so the July-Aug bird should be no.6 or 7 for Sweden.

SHARPTAILED SANDPIPER, Calidris acuminata (spetsstjärtad snäppa)
1 ad summer at Örtofta ponds, N. Lund (Scania) 10-13.8.
An interesting record, as one was seen at the same spot 19-20 Aug. 1999, so it could be the same bird. Both years it was found together with big numbers of other waders. But the record will be considered as a new, so it will be No. 6.

1 Lake Hornborgasjön (Västergötland) 17-18.6.

European Bee-eater, Merops apiaster (biätare)
Observations from many places on south Öland, I think it is the same bird;
Resmo 15.7, Risinge 17.7, Övre Västerstad 20.7, Ottenby 25.7, Näsby 26.7, Segerstad 26.7, Risinge again 27.7. But nearby Kalmar (Småland) 29.7 indicates that it left Öland.
Also one breeding attempt in the province Blekinge, but the nesting site was destroyed by heavy raining. The locality is kept secret.
1 Älgkärrstippen, Stockholm (Uppland) 5.8.
CALANDRA LARK, Melanocorypha calandra (kalanderlärka)
1 Sandby (Öland) 1-3.8. The first twitchable in Sweden for most birders. No. 4 for Sweden. The first ones in Sweden was Vetlanda (Småland) 15.1 1972 and Holmsund (Västerbotten) 29-30.5. 1983.
The birds reaching Scandinavia probably belongs to the migrating Russian population, so the bird on Öland could have been there since May maybe ?!

Citrine Wagtail, M. citreola (citronärla)
1 m Heros, Smedjebacken (Dalarna) 16.7.

Richard's Pipit, Anthus richardi (större piplärka)
1 degernäs, Umeå (Västerbotten) 12-13.8.

Common Stonechat, Saxicola torquata (svarthakad buskskvätta)
At Vårhallarna (Scania) one male was found 14.3. Then 24 April it was joined by a female. They bred in May-June and got 3 nestlings. First Swedish breeding record. Probably race torquata.Then in July they had a second brood with 4 nestlings! So now there are 2 adults and 7 juveniles at the spot. Very nice. Soon we can hopefully count this species as a new breeding species on the Swedish list.

ZITTING CISTICOLA, Cisticola juncidis (grässångare)
New for Sweden, and probably Scandinavia !
Found at the SW-tip of Sweden; Nabben, Falsterbo by our raptor counter Nils Kjellen, seen and heard briefly alredy in the evening 11.8, but determined in the morning 12.8. Still at the same spot this evening, 16.8. A VERY unexpexted species (that's why Nils and C-G Dahl didn't believe what they heard 11.8...).

LANCEOLATED WARBLER, Locustella lanceolata (träsksångare)
1 singing Ersnäs, S Luleå (Norrbotten) 19-20.7. No. 4 for Sweden if accepted (good recordings are needed!).

AQUATIC WARBLER, Acrocephalus paludicola (vattensångare)
1 1y ringed Falsterbo (Scania) 25.7.

Arctic Warbler, Phylloscopus norealis (nordsångare)
1 still singing at Abisko (Lapland) -10.7.

Firecrest, Regulus ignicapillus (brandkronad kungsfågel)
1 singing male seen since June, + female 16.7 and 9.8 at Dammåkra, Ravlunda (Scania) so maybe breeding took place.

Corn Bunting, Miliara calandra (kornsparv)
Outside breeding areas in Scania; 1 Faludden (Gotland) 12.7 and Stockviken 28.7.
