ORIENTAL PRATINCOLE (?), Glareola maldivarum (orientvadarsvala)
1 2y(?) at Ängsnäset, Falsterbo peninsula (Scania) 2.7 - and still there today 12.7,
caused a major debate. The plumage is a bit worn, but not VERY much. It seems that
there are more characters pointing towards Oriental Pratincole than towards Collared
(G. pratincola), so IF it will be accepted as an Oriental Pratincole, it will be
new to Sweden (number 469, or if the American Mourning Dove is accepted as cat. A-C number
470). The pratincole dropped a feather, which was colleted and send to DNA analysis,
hopefully there is some reference material to compare with somewhere in the world.
It is annoying I think when birding is going towards DNA-confirmation.... There is a
case in Sweden recently when a Phylloscopus was determined in the field as a Hume's
Leaf Warbler (Ph. humei), ringed as a Yellow-browed Warbler (Ph. inornata) and DNA-analysed as a Hume's.
If accepted as an Oriental Pratincole it will be species no. 400 in Scania !
There are very few accepted records in Europe of Oriental Pratincole, 2 or 3 in Great
Britain are the only ones I have heard of.
Then there is 1 record from Cyprus and 1 record from Israel 1999 (accepted 1 month
ago).

This is the first record in Sweden of this species. It is heavily debated whether
it could be a spontaneous record or not. IF the rarities committee accepts it as
spontane (cat. A-C) it will be species no. 469 on the Swedish list. But since it
is a common cagebird in Europe it will PROBABLY be placed in cat. D. We will see.
