SWEDISH AUTUMN RARITY REPORT 20 September - 10 October 1999

1 week ago several good raptor days in Falsterbo (Scania) with 3 all time high counts;

Eurasian Sparrowhawk, Accipiter nisus (sparvhök) 3468 (almost 1000 more than the previous best day)
Red Kite, Milvus milvus (röd glada) 303
Merlin, Falco columbarius (stenfalk) 46


The major event this period was the huge number of Pomarine Jaeger, Stercorarius pomarinus (bredstjärtad labb) along the eastern coasts, 365 at 1 spot for example (see below).

A good number of Common Eider, (S. mollissima) was 102000 at Utlängan (Blekinge) 6.10.

Probably some of the numbers below are double counts. Despite that the numbers are massive, and show a fantastic migration along the Swedish east coast.Some of the individuals could be Parasitic Jaeger, S. parasiticus (labb), but probably only a few in that case.3 adults were determined, all the rest were first year birds;

Tengmalm s Owl, Aegolius funereus (pärluggla) are on the move this autumn, and also some Eurasian Pygmy Owl, Glaucidium passerinum (sparvuggla). On Gotland in the Baltic Sea the 4th record only of Pygmy Owl, at Östergarn 4.10.

RADDE S WARBLER, Phylloscopus schwarzi (videsångare)
1 ringed at Stora Fjäderägg (Västerbotten) 23.9. Remained at this island until 3.10 (seen jumping around on a roof top!). 1 ringed Häradsskär (Östergötland) 1-2.10, 1 Ås (Öland) 5.10.
1 ringed Falsterbo (Scania) 9.10. The first twitchable in Scania (only 1 previous record in Scania, also Falsterbo, 1988).
Over 40 records in Sweden now.

DUSKY WARBLER, Phylloscopus fuscatus (brunsångare)
1 ringed Hoburgen (Gotland) 30.9. Around 40 records also.

Pallas s Leaf Warbler, Phylloscopus proregulus (kungsfågelsångare)
Around 40 records. At Örskär (Uppland) 25 (!!!) 10.10, and Stora Fjäderägg (Västerbotten) had 9.

Yellow-browed Warbler, Phylloscopus inornatus (taigasångare)
20 records.

Firecrest, Regulus ignicapillus (brandkronad kungsfågel)
1 m Kungsmarken (Scania) 4.10.

(Two-barred) Greenish Warbler, Phylloscopus trochiloides plumbeitarsus (ÖSTLIG LUNDSÅNGARE)
1 ringed Utklippan (Blekinge) 6.10. Very few European records of this race, previosly considered as separate species. Breeds in East Asia.
